Hominins were geographically widely distributed with fossil discoveries coming from central, east, and south Africa. Among these hominins were 12 species. A variety of early hominids lived in Africa.
Pre-Australopiths - the earliest and most primitive hominins ( 7.0 - 4.4 mya)
Australopiths - diverse forms, some more primitive, others highly derived ( 4.2-1.2 mya)
Early homo- the first members of our genus ( 2.4 -1.4 mya)
