Constraints on Nineteenth Century Evolution Theory

Even though Darwin argued for the concept of evolution and the role of natural selection, he did not completely understand evolutionary change.
natural selection acts on variation within species. scientists including Darwin did not understand the source of the variation, as well as how parents passed on traits to the offspring.  Scientists believe the parents traits were mixed together to produce characteristics in the offspring.
In the twentieth century there was a merger of the natural selection theory and Gregor Medel's discoveries, which was crucial because before this scientists thought the concepts were unrelated. Gregor Mendel discovered the dominate and recessive genes and created the Law if Segregation and Law of Independent Assortments, also knows as Mendel's Laws of Inheritance.  In 1953 DNA structures were found which aloud many other findings to  occur. Scientists began to find the human and chimpanzee genome sequence, as well as other species. This was very useful because we could compare the differenced and similarities between different species.
